Teen Cosmic Reading Challenge
Teens across Lambton County are encouraged to set reading goals and to participate in fun activities this summer by taking part in the Teen Cosmic Reading Challenge! Teens can register and report the number of days on which they have read for a minimum of 15 minutes. For every fourteen days reported, teens will earn one free book to a maximum of three book prizes. In addition to the reading challenge, teens can participate in a variety of activities and programs.
Reading Suggestions
Check out reading suggestions each week of books you can borrow with your Lambton County Library card!
Summer Activities Checklist
Explore the world of astronomy by completing as many items as you can on our Summer Activities Checklist. Teens will be entered into a draw to win one of six $50 Amazon gift cards for each photo submitted of the activity they completed.
- Go stargazing with friends or family (or both!)
- Watch a meteor shower
- Find five different constellations
- Attempt astrophotography with a smart phone or camera; take your best picture of the night sky
- Operate a robotic telescope and create an image with MicroObservatory.
- Keep a night sky journal for six weeks. Complete at least one entry per week where you note a different observation about the night sky: this could include positioning of moon, stars, planets, the presence of meteors etc.
Photographic evidence for each activity completed on the list is required to be entered into the draw. The photos can be of teens completing the activity, a constellation map with constellations checked off, the astrophotography photo teens attempted, the file received from MicroObservatory, or a photo of the journal etc.
Out of this World Good Deeds
Throughout the summer, teens and their friends and family are encouraged to be on the lookout for superstars in their community. Whether it’s a family member, friend, acquaintance or someone they admire in their community, when they see a good deed, submit the name of the person and their good deed. Teens will earn one ballot for making the submission, and the superstars will earn one ballot for each good deed submitted on their behalf, for a chance to win a telescope at the end of the Teen Cosmic Reading Challenge.
Winners must live, work, attend school, or own property in Lambton County.
Star Gazing Party
Explore the galaxy with the Sarnia Astronomical Society as they give visitors a tour of the night sky using telescopes and projection screens. Both parties will take place during the Perseids Meteor Shower.
