Ontario Public Library Week

Wyoming, ON – Lambton County Library is planning several contests and special events to celebrate Ontario Public Library Week from October 16 – 20, 2023. This province-wide initiative raises awareness of the valuable role of libraries in the lives of people of all ages.

The following contests and events will take place from October 16 – 20, 2023:

• Everyone who checks out a physical item from the library will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a Lego kit, Amazon Gift Card, or Tourism Sarnia-Lambton Gift Card, depending on their age.

• Everyone who completes three library-related activities on the Beanstack app bingo card, such as checking out a book, attending a program, or enrolling in an online course, will have a chance to win a Lego kit, Amazon Gift Card, or Tourism Sarnia -Lambton Gift Card, depending on their age.

• Any current library card holder who refers a friend or family member to the library to sign up for a new library card will have a chance to win a $50 Tourism Sarnia-Lambton gift card and a Lambton County Library prize pack. One new library card holder will also be selected for the same prize.

• Local firefighters will be sharing stories and fire safety at special story times during the week, and some Lambton County Councillors will also be dropping by select libraries to join in on story times and programs. A list of events can be found on the library’s online event calendar.

“This year’s theme for Ontario Public Library Week is Libraries for Life, and here at Lambton County Library, we’ve been delivering library services to every age group, during every stage of their life for over 90 years,” said Darlene Coke, Manager, Library Services. “We circulated over 900,000 physical and digital items last year which is a strong indicator of the important role libraries serve in helping build, maintain, and grow literacy skills to every age group, and those literacy skills are important for a healthy, productive, and prosperous community.”

Lambton County Library delivers library services from 25 locations, a mobile library service that visits retirement complexes and long-term care homes, a pilot project books by mail service, and community outreach events such as story times at EarlyON Child and Family Centres, in-school visits to classrooms, and attendance at community events.

“There is no shortage of items, activities, or ideas that public libraries can help people with at any age,” continued Coke. “While historically, libraries were all about books, today you can use your free library card to stream music, watch movies, take an online course, use Ancestry Library Edition to research your family tree, borrow a pair of snow shoes, a fishing pole, or binoculars, attend a story time or book club meeting, borrow a pass to gain free admission to selected cultural sites like museums or art galleries, try emerging technology like 3-D printers, or make your own projects using our sewing machines, laser cutter, or VHS converter. The possibilities are endless.”

Library cards are free for anyone who lives, works, studies, or owns property in Lambton County, or lives in a First Nations community anywhere in the province of Ontario. Library cards are valid for a two-year period and must be renewed every two years. To register for a library card, visit any Lambton County Library location with photo and address information.
